Larry Page and Sergey Brin, founders of the popular Internet search engine, credited their years as Montessori students as a major factor behind their success.
Scientific observation has established that education is not what the teacher gives; education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words but by experiences upon the environment. The task of the teacher becomes that of preparing a series of motives of cultural activity, spread over a specially prepared environment, and then refraining from obtrusive interference. Human teachers can only help the great work that is being done, as servants help the master. Doing so, they will be witnesses to the unfolding of the human soul and to the rising of a New Man who will not be a victim of events, but will have the clarity of vision to direct and shape the future of human society. - Maria Montessori, Education for a New World

The brain connects left side to right side from birth to six years old.  Even infants hunger for the repitition and we supply it with: numbers, phonetic sounds, shapes, colors, stories and songs. The infants are only in their cribs when it is rest time.

The repetition continues while the little ones learn to get a mat, choose a work from the shelves, complete it and return it to its place on the shelf.

Five areas in the classroom to fulfill all of the desires of the child. They include: Practical Life (Development of motor skills, Care of self, Care of environment, Grace and Courtesy), Sensorial (Educates all of the senses), Math (teaches quantities, symbols and usage of quantity/symbols together)
Language (phonetic sounds, developing reading skills)
Culture (Hands on materials for history, geography, zoology, botany, biology, science)

The teacher gives lessons and observes to see if the child has mastered it.
Freedom within limits, as the children move around the classroom to get a work from the shelves that fulfill them.  The teacher can then witness their strengths and build on them.

This age group is mixed and allows the children to be motivated by the others, become the teacher to others while continuing to be motivated and being a teacher to all.  When a new child arrives, the teacher can assign a student to give them lessons and work with them.  Montessori motivates the children to respect one another in all areas of difference.
